Identification of Corroded Busbar During Planned Maintenance
Overview
During a programme of intrusive low voltage (LV) switchgear maintenance, PTM Combined Services identified significant corrosion on a section of the main busbar assembly. The defect, which was not visible during routine visual inspections, highlighted the importance of planned intrusive maintenance in maintaining the safety and reliability of critical electrical infrastructure.
The Challenge
Electrical switchgear can deteriorate over time due to environmental conditions, moisture ingress and ageing components. Corrosion within busbar systems can increase resistance, create overheating risks and ultimately lead to equipment failure or unplanned power outages.
The challenge was to identify any hidden defects before they developed into a serious operational or safety issue.
Our Solution
Our engineers carried out a comprehensive intrusive inspection of the LV switchgear, safely isolating the equipment before dismantling key components to allow detailed examination of the internal busbar system.
During the inspection, corrosion was discovered on the busbar assembly. The defect was documented, the client was immediately informed and recommendations were provided for remedial works to restore the integrity of the electrical distribution system.
Results
The intrusive maintenance programme enabled the issue to be identified before it resulted in equipment failure, reducing the risk of costly downtime and improving the long-term reliability of the electrical installation.
